Why do companies offer you "free gifts?" Aren't gifts by definition free?

Ok, some have answered but here is the definition of 'gift':
1. something given voluntarily without payment in return.
2. something bestowed or acquired without any particular effort by the recipient or without its being earned: Those extra points he got in the game were a total gift.

Because in advertising "free" is the magic word. Think of the all the TV commercials where they give something away for free. All you need to do is pay shipping and handling which cost more than it would cost to buy the thing in the first place.

- It is possible to offer a gift, but the recipient has to pay for the cost of delivery. In that case, the gift is not completely free.
