A big unjustified bill!!??!?
Back in May my daughter (4 months at the time) got sick with a bug and was admitted to hospital for one night. At the time of admission we were asked if she was to be put as a private or public patient. As we have private health insurance with Vhi we agreed to the private option thinking everything would be covered.
I am not the policy holder, my father is, he lives in a different county altogether.
My daughter stayed for the total of one night, and was let home the following day. A while after we received a hospital bill for €980. I passed it onto the insurance company thinking no more of it.
Today, we received a letter from the insurance company (vhi) who say they are not paying the bill as new members (my daughter) must be a member for 26 weeks before you can claim for anything.
I agrued that I did not receive the terms and conditions, where it states the 26 weeks waiting period, as they were sent to the policy holder (my father) and that I thought it was unfair. If I had of known she was not covered then I would have never put her in as a private patient. They still stand firm that they are not paying the bill.
My daughter was in hospital for the total of one night. She didnt even drink or eat anything, we (her parents) didnt even have a cup of tea! She would have been given a private room anyway as she was deemed contagious.
Does this jusitfy a bill of €980??!!!
Do I have any come back??? I need advice as to what to do??

Unfortunately, it sounds like the insurance company are in the right. If it does say in their terms and conditions about the 26 week period and they were sent to the policy holder (your father) it's not the insurance company's fault that you didn't know.
You could try contacting the hospital, explaining the position, and see if there's any way of reducing the bill or spreading the payment out over a period of time so it's not as big a lump to pay in one as they will have probably charged it at a premium thinking that the insurers were paying out. But apart from that I don't see what else you can do.
