Resolved Question
My son has roughly £50 in copper coins - can they be banked?
My 7 yr old has accumulated a vast collection of copper coins. I now think it's time to bank them or exchange them for paper money.
Can these be bagged up (in the way that a bank would do themselves) and take them to my bak to have them cashed or put into my bank account (HSBC/Halifax).
Any other fee-free or cheap alternatives apart from banking them?

Take them as is to your local Asda or Morrisons, most stores have Cash change machines, where you empty the coins into a tray the machine counts it, deducts 8.5p from every pound and you take the slip it gives you and either use it in store or customer services will change it in to notes for you (depending on the amount). on £50 it will cost about £4.25ish to change it
Most banks will not change or accept any amounts of coinage anymore whether pre-bagged ot not.
It could also be worth checking with your local shops if they would swap small change for notes.

- I'd take them to a local supermarket where they have a machine called Coinstar (I think it's called). Just feed them in and you take the receipt to the cashier who will give you the banknotes that you can then pay into an account. I think they charge a nominal fee of about 30p. If you were to take it to a bank they could technically accept them. They would have to weigh them and that may take some time.
- Your best bet is to go to your bank and get some cash bags and the bag up the cash according to what it says on the bag as banks will not take a large amout of mixed coins. you could eiather have it changed into paper money or paid into a bank account or why not open a child trust fund with it.
- you'll need to bag them up yourself in like for like (1 pennies with 1's etc) and then take them into your bank. although some baanks have a daily limit, for kids this might be different. you could also see if your local tesco has aq change machine, mine does, you just tip it all into a shoot and it counts it out and then gives you pounds or notes. yay!
- you can pay them into a bank account, the halifax will not change them into bankable cash , i.e notes.
or take them to coinstar machines, they charge though, the one at our local morrisons charges 7.51p per £1
