How could I write to my boss saying that I am required a day off due to a special family occasion?
I have my sister's wedding in a month so would need to write a simple letter saying I need to go.

Dear *my manager's name*
I am writing to inform you that I cannot work on 19 September 2009 due to a close family wedding that I am required to attend. I sincerely apologise for any inconvience due to the lack of short notice.

Is the above good enough to be a standard?

Sorry, you don't state that you cannot work, you request a day off. Courtesy will get you everywhere while demands will get you nowhere. Try this:
Dear Manager,
I am requesting the day of September 19, 2009, off for the joyous occasion of my sister's wedding. I apologize for the short notice, since I just got the happy news. I would appreciate you allowing me to join in this family celebration. Please let ne know soon, so that I may make travel arrangements.
Sincerely,
Helen
