Do I need Trading names or a Parent Company?

I'm looking to set up two businesses (totally different). I'm thinking its best to set up one company, then have two trading names,,,,is this a good idea? How do I set up trading names?

OR should I have three companies? One parent company ect?

have you any isea about small business?
start up as a sole trader before you go registering with Company House - otherwise your vat returns will be a headache!
